 September 14th Edition of

The K/1 Class News

Hello Everyone!

We had an exciting first week as a whole class.  Everyone is learning about our class expectations and routines such as sitting in the circle, following the group plan, cleaning up, or forming a line at the door.  I am impressed with how quickly everyone is adjusting!

The students have enjoyed getting to know one another this week and have had lots of fun learning about similarities and differences. The grade 1’s shared a little about themselves during Show and Tell.

Here are some highlights from our week:

On Monday the K students hunted for their first initials and made letter art while the 1’s made name signs for their self-portraits. We continued learning about the routines of our school day. The kids were very excited to go to the gym! We also learned a little more about our new friends and enjoyed searching for special nature items to represent numbers 1-10.

Tuesday, we practiced tracing our numbers to 10, played in centres and went to Music class. We had our first Whole School Meeting. Later we explored the “small” forest before the end of the day and tested out what sinks or floats from nature.

On Wednesday we continued to work on playing safely and cooperatively in the gym and welcomed KK in to do our first empathy circle. It was great! Later we made beautiful sunflower art and went to the forest.

Thursday was a half day. We had free choice in the gym, drew pictures of our family (the grade 1’s added words) and we ended off our week with our Terry Fox run! The children were amazing! Well done.

Thank you to those of you who have already returned the student information forms. Marcie needs them all back by Monday.

Next week we start our All About Me presentations for the K’s! Here is a reminder about who is scheduled for the week:

Monday- Abby and Aurora

Tuesday- Ava and Avery

Wednesday- Fiera and Gemma

Thursday- Jupiter and Sanghe

As we near the colder seasons, here is a reminder to please keep your child home when sick. Some easy tips to remember are:

-stay home for 24 hours after vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever.

-stay home if mucus is thick, green and needs constant blowing.

-Stay home if they have a persistent cough (lingering coughs are understandable) or a sore throat.

Once energy levels are back up and cold symptoms have lessened, come on back!

Other reminders:

-Please use the planner to communicate after school plans (especially if they change from the norm) as I am still getting used to 20 different schedules. Thank you!

-Please send indoor shoes to be left at school and a non-breakable mug to hang up for water.

I am looking for a parent who would be willing to take on the position of class rep. This person would communicate info from the PAC, if needed, and activate the emergency phone tree if schools were closed due to the weather. Please let me know if you would like to be this person. I will take the first to respond.

Important Dates to Remember

September 27 Individual school photos

October 2 Orange Shirt Day (info to come)

October 12 Visit from Fire Department

We have a wonderful group of children in this class and I know that it will be a happy and exciting year for all of us!

Warmly,

Ara Van Riel and Ms. Janice

We have a lot of fun playing centres time!

Forest time is also great for the imagination!

Will it sink or float?
