The Kindergarten Class News

Greetings!

Another week goes by. The rains have finally arrived. Please insure your child has proper rain gear and boots when they come to school as we go out every day.

This week we began our Home Reading program! Thanks for participating in this. The kids are so proud to announce they read the “little books”. If you can keep the reading log and book in the planner bag, it makes it easier for me to keep track of progress. Thanks!

On Monday we continued to learn about printing and practiced the lowercase letter ‘f’. Later we made pumpkin art and then went to the pumpkin patch!! The kids were so excited to ride the school bus and pick out a pumpkin.

Tuesday was our Oral Language Groups. This week we worked on story telling using wordless picture books. We also went to Music class and wrote about our favourite part of our field trip. Later we got a lesson on bus safety from the bus drivers and went to the forest.

On Wednesday we played a card game called “Higher or Lower”. The kids did a great job recognizing if a number was higher or lower than the other number. Later the went to the library and checked out a new book.

Thursday was a half day. We played an alphabet game, had free choice in the gym and worked on how to solve problems that may come up.

We have been enjoying the regular Show and Tell days! Next week the children are encouraged to bring something that starts with the letter D. We are working our way through the alphabet.

Monday is Halloween! This will be an exciting and busy day for all of us. Children are welcome to wear costumes to school (please leave weapons at home). If you would like to send in a healthy/non sugary snack to share, we are going to have a little party in the afternoon. There will be a costume parade and an optional haunted hallway to check out. I may show a short Halloween movie as energy is likely to be high. Please do not send kids with Halloween candy in lunches. We appreciate these treats to be saved for home.

Important Dates to Remember:

Oct. 31 Halloween

Nov. 1 Photo retakes

Nov. 6 Daylight Saving time (fall back)

Nov. 11 Remembrance Day

Have a lovely weekend and Happy Halloween!

Warmly,

Ara Van Riel

Greetings Everyone!

We had another beautiful week! It was great having nearly everyone back in class. Here are some highlights to keep you in the loop.

Monday, we worked on printing the lowercase letter ‘t’. The class also played a fun spider game in the gym, painted spiderwebs and found a new class pet! A Praying mantis was found outside, and we have been enjoying learning about this creature.

On Tuesday, we practiced writing our names using different colours and had our Oral Language Groups. Later the kids went to Music, and we played in the forest.

Wednesday, we started learning about identifying our emotions and leveling how we are feeling from 1-5. We call it the Emotional Thermometer with

1- being calm, cool, and collected.

2- is good but maybe a little tired.

3- is a bit worried or upset and may need some help from an adult.

4- is anxious or even mad. Needing to get help.

5- is out of control.

The kids drew and “wrote” about things that help them feel calm. Later the class went to exchange books at the library.

Thursday was an interesting day. We have a great time in the gym, had fun looking for and counting pumpkins and everyone did great practicing an earthquake drill. Later the class was very flexible when we faced big disappointment when we found out our bus wasn’t coming to take us to the pumpkin patch. We watched a little Peter Rabbit show as a special treat and played in the forest.

I have put together a class email contact list. I know the kids love connecting outside of school hours and “play dates” are great for this.

Next week I will be starting our Home Reading program. The kids love choosing a “just right” book to bring home to read to you. Keep an eye out for this in the planner bag.

Important Dates to Remember:

Oct. 24 Trip to the pumpkin patch (rescheduled)

Oct. 27 Early dismissal and parent/teacher meetings

Oct. 31 Halloween/class party

Nov. 11 Remembrance Day

Have a great weekend!
