The Kindergarten Class News

Hi Everyone! What a week!
Here are some highlights:

Monday we started learning about basketball in the gym, learned about the four season and finished off our animal story workshops. You will see the finished products at the Student Led Conferences. We finally visited the library, after many missed weeks and went outside.

On Tuesday the class had another fun dance lesson from Robynn Scott, worked on printing and measured using unifix cubes. Later Glen came in to continue working on our class story.

Wednesday was Pink Shirt Day! It was great seeing the school support anti-bullying in this way. We started learning about the moon and made moon art. We also wrote in our journals and practiced our reading. Kaz came in to continue teaching the class about their bodies. This week Kaz talked when it is appropriate for another person to touch your private parts (for example, if you are sick, hurt or being washed).

Thursday was another fun day. We had our Whole School Meeting (Marrella, Emma and Jace showed their moon art), Music and our Oral Language Groups. We are working on compound words at the moment. In the afternoon we all enjoyed the Spring Showcase. There were many amazing acts and creations. Everyone loved it!

Reminder:
March 7th will be an early dismissal day for the Student Led Conferences. This is a mandatory activity as it is considered your child’s report card. If you cannot make it on the 7th we will have to reschedule. Buses will run as usual and will leave the school at 11:30am. Please sign up for a time to meet, if you haven’t already done so.

Registration for the 2019-2020 school year is now open! If you know of anyone with a child turning five this year, please advise them to see Jenny in the office to register for Kindergarten.

Important dates to remember:
March 7 Early dismissal for Student Led Conferences
March 15 First day of Spring Break
April 1 School back in session

Hi Everyone!
Here are some highlights from our week:

Monday the school was closed for Family Day.

On Tuesday the class had another fun dance lesson from Robynn Scott, worked on printing and measured using unifix cubes. Later Glen came in to continue working on our class story.

On Wednesday I was away at a Union meeting. The class worked on rhyming, focused on adding details in their journals and practiced reading.

Thursday was our Whole School Meeting. This term we are raising money to donate to the SPCA. Thanks to those who brought in spare change. Each class was entered into a draw for a pink shirt and two pink bracelets to help support Pink Shirt Day (next Wed.). Elijah won the pink shirt and Chet and Aurelia won the bracelets. Congratulations! West, Rowan and Jamie presented their art.

Friday was a half-day. The kids continued to work on adding interesting detail to their writing/pictures and we worked more on story making.

March 7th will be an early dismissal day for the Student Led Conferences. This is a mandatory activity as it is considered your child’s report card. If you cannot make it on the 7th we will have to reschedule. Buses will run as usual and will leave the school at 11:30am.

Happy Valentines Day Everyone!
As there was no school Monday-Wednesday, it will be a very short newsletter!

Monday-Wednesday there was no school due to snow.

On Thursday we were all happy to be back at school (for those of us who could make it)! As it was Valentines Day, we made cards in the morning for loved ones. Later the class went to Music and we had free choice in the gym. We also exchanged cards and had a little party in the afternoon. Finally, we went outside and played in the deep snow. It was a short, yet sweet, week!

Important dates to remember:
February 18 No School (Family Day)
February 22 Half day of school
February 27 Pink Shirt Day
February 28 Spring Showcase

Warmly,

February 7th Edition of
The Kindergarten Class News

Greetings Everyone!
It was an exciting week at school for the kids with the snow finally arriving. February is proving to be a very busy month with many guests coming in to enhance the learning!

Monday was a packed day! We only had about half the class but still managed to proceed with a fun story workshop, made Chinese lanterns while learning about Chinese New Year, went to the library and worked on problem solving in math.

Tuesday we had most of the class back. We welcomed Robynn Scott in to begin a creative movement dance workshop. She will visit every Tuesday for the next month. We also worked on identifying the initial sound in words, compared shorter and longer lengths in math and worked on our story project with Glen in the afternoon.

On Wednesday we worked in our journals and welcomed Laura Kiel and Johanna Hoskin in to begin another school wide art project. Each child in the school will be responsible for creating a clay salmon piece to replace the salmon on the side of the school. It is exciting to know that our kids will be a part of a project that will be enjoyed for years to come. Also on Wednesday, Kaz continued her unit on respecting the body and the children drew and labelled their own bodies.

Thursday we continued working on throwing skills in the gym, went to Whole School Meeting (where some people from Saturna's Orca Whale research team came to show us what they do) and went to Music. In our Oral Language Groups, we started learning about segmenting sentences into words and later we went to the bog and discovered it is frozen!

Next Thursday is Valentines Day. An info sheet about our class party was sent home this week. As a reminder, if your child chooses to bring cards or anything to school, we ask that they bring one for everyone. We will make little bags to collect the cards in. I suggest not addressing the cards to make handing them out easier but writing whom they are from would be nice. We will be having a shared snack on Valentines Day. If you would like to send something to share, the kids would be sure to enjoy it. I will make cookies.

The Spring Showcase is fast approaching. Forms are due, no later than Wednesday, February 13th. Students need to practice in their own time and be ready to audition for their teachers the following week (Feb 19-22). This check in ensures that students have made efforts and will be ready for the Showcase on Thursday, February 28th.  Creations will be brought to the office on Wednesday, February 27th. Please include a label with students name, age and title of creation.

As our school has had many children home sick, I’m sending a friendly reminder to please keep children home at least 24 hours after the last time he or she has thrown up. For example, if your child throws up at 12pm on Sunday they should not come to school until 12pm on Monday (or wait until Tuesday to return).

Also, if you know of any children who will be turning 5 this year, Kindergarten registration for the 2019-2020 school year is now open until the end of the month.

Important dates to remember:
February 14Valentines Day/class party
February 18 Family Day (no school)
February 22 School in session/half day
February 27 Pink Shirt Day (to support anti-bullying)
February 28 Spring Showcase 1:15pm

Warmly,
Ara Van Riel
