Newsletter #16

 January 14th Edition of

The Kindergarten Class News

Hi Everyone!

Here is a recap of some of the things we did this week.

On Monday we continued working on balance activities in the gym. We also made very cute penguins in art and practiced printing. Later we learned a new ‘word of the week’ and made bark rubbings on our favourite trees.

Tuesday, we started back up with our Oral Language Groups and focused on rhyme. We also wrote in our journals and went to Music class.

On Wednesday we continued learning about measurement in math and learned more about penguins. After the library, the kids practiced reading and then we played a fun ABC game outside.

Thursday, we had a fun time in the gym and practiced rhyming. We also went upstairs to do buddy reading with the grade 1-2 class and then had a fire drill! The class was very well behaved.

Next week will be “Nn” week for show and tell. If your child has something beginning with the letter N to show on their day that would be great. I am not strict about this and they are also welcome to bring something they really want to share, even if it doesn’t begin with N. On that note, if it is not a S&T related item, please leave it at home. We generally don’t encourage toys from home as they can cause conflict and with the COVID protocols, it’s best not to have too many household items coming in. Thanks for your understanding.

Important dates to remember:

February 15 Family Day (no school)

February 19 School in session

Stay tuned for information regarding a trip to Xwaaqw'um (Burgoyne Bay) coming up later this month. Details to come.

Enjoy the weekend!

Warmly,

Ara Van Riel

Newsletter #15

 January 7th Edition of

The Kindergarten Class News

Welcome back Everyone!

I hope you all had a good holiday and are ready for a great new term. The kids are, understandably, readjusting to the routines and expectations of the classroom and are likely pretty tired out after our days!

On Monday the students were very excited to be back at school. We talked about the months in the year and focused in on what happens in winter during writing. We started working on balancing activities in the gym and continued with our printing practice. Later we talked about the 5 senses and played a guessing game in the outdoor classroom using only the sense of touch.

Tuesday, we worked on counting on from a number other than one, a tricky concept for many! We also wrote about the winter break in journals and went to music. In the forest, we visited our favourite trees and noticed how the bark felt.

On Wednesday we started learning about measurement in math and also began a unit on penguins. Later we visited the library and worked on our reading. It was so nice to have a sunny afternoon outside after all of the rain we have been having.

On Thursday we continued working with measurement, comparing size, and played a beginning sound game. We also had music class and Quentin joined us for some fun outside.

Next week is ‘Mm’ week for Show and Tell.

Just a reminder that if you arrive after 8:30am to please check in at the office to let Rebecca know your child has come to school.

It was a great first week back. I hope you enjoy your weekend.

Warmly,

Ara Van Riel

The Kindergarten Class News

Hello Everyone!

Here is the last newsletter before the break!

On Monday the class worked on printing the lowercase letter ‘x’, made pinecone ornaments and learned the Word of the Week (he). Later, we enjoyed time in the forest.

Tuesday, we practiced our math skills through a dice activity, and wrote about what we want to do over the Winter Break. The kids went to Music class in the afternoon.

Wednesday was out first Pizza Day! Everyone was very excited about this. We also played a math game with dominos and has a special holiday treat of a show. Later we visited the bog and played in the forest. The library is closed for the break and will be back open in the new year.

On Thursday we searched for words in a word search activity, enjoyed a presentation from Mr. Lightfoot’s class (outside) and had our last buddy reading session with Mrs. K’s class. Later the class went to Music and we had a special treat from Ms. Mullan, who came baring candy cane gifts! The kids helped clean up the class and we also searched for missing sand toys in the forest. What great helpers!

Important dates to remember:

January 4 School re-opens.

Just a reminder that I like to re-use the art folders if you can send them back. I hope you enjoy looking through some of the work we do at school.

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday, even if it will be on the quiet side, and we will see you next year!
