The K/1 Class News

Hi Everyone!

Here are some highlights from our week:

Monday the school was closed for Family Day. I hope you enjoyed the extra time!

Mrs. Cheryl is back! The kids were all excited to see her Tuesday morning. We also had Mrs. Creech in the classroom for a couple of mornings while I completed the EDI surveys.

The kids continued their story workshop writing and now have written an introduction and middle (problem to solve). Mrs. Cheryl has begun teaching a unit on the sky and the class has shown great excitement about becoming little scientists!

Next week Mrs. Cheryl will start teaching a dance unit in the gym and a measurement unit in math.

Friday was a school day, crazy hair and PJ day! Whenever Monday is a holiday, Friday runs on a Monday schedule, so we went to the library and started working on syllables in our oral language groups. Please return the library books again on Monday.

We are moving on to the letter T in show and tell.

 February 15th Edition of

The K/1 Class News

Hello Everyone!

We had a busy week. The class has begun writing their own stories inspired by story workshop. They have been trying to work on their writing goals and continue to grow as writers. We had another lesson on compound words and the class is ready to move on. KK from The Circle visited again and we talked about fair versus equality, a tricky concept for some!

Wednesday was Valentine’s Day and our Student Led conferences! The kids were excited to fill the mailboxes with cards. A great lesson on giving! Thanks to those of you who made it out to celebrate your child’s learning. It was so cute watching how proud each child was to share with you some of what they have been working on. For those of you who were unable to attend, I will be offering another chance to come at 3pm on Tuesday. Please RSVP if you plan on attending so I can set up.

We saved our Valentine’s celebration for Thursday and the kids had a fun day. Thanks to the parents who sent in snacks to share, it always makes these days more special.

Mrs. Cheryl will be returning to complete her practicum starting on Tuesday! We look forward to having her back. She will be with us until late April.

 February 8th Edition of

The K/1 Class News

Greetings Everyone!

We had rather low attendance this week as another illness seems to be circulating. I am hoping everyone will be healthy for next week. A friendly reminder to please include both me and the office in emails about any absences as I do the attendance and Marcie follows up. Also, if either of us is away, it’s helpful to have this information go to two places. Thanks!

We had another session of our Oral Language Groups and we started learning about compound words. The kids rocked this! The class worked hard on their writing this week and have started identifying their strengths and goals for improvement. We also started a story making workshop.

We made Valentine’s mailboxes and everyone is getting excited about Valentine’s Day next week. I sent home a class list of names so that if your child wants to make cards, everyone can be included. We will have a little Valentine’s Day Party on Thursday, February 15th as there’s not a lot of time on the 14th given the early dismissal. If you would like to send in a healthy snack to be shared, we will have a little celebration and take home the mailboxes. Please let me know if there's anything you do not want your child to eat.

Important Dates to Remember:

February 14 Valentine’s Day/Early dismissal (12pm please be on time).

February 19 Family Day (no school)

February 23 School in session

February 28 Pink Shirt Day (to support anti-bullying)

Hello Again!

We are officially half way through the school year. Registration for next year has opened for new K's if you know of any families with a child who turns 5 this year.

This week we focused on learning our "tensies" (numbers that add up to 10) in math. We continued work with "at" words and sounding out words in reading and writing. We also joined the grade 6/7 class to make paper lanterns and learn a bit about the Lunar New Year.

In art, the children learned about warm and cool colours and created some beautiful art. They also got to play xylophones in Music class during their study of instruments.

Thanks to those of you who have already signed up for the Student Led Conferences. The kids are working hard to prepare.
