Newsletter #22

 March 11th Edition of

The Kindergarten Class News

Hello Everyone, what a week! It was a busy one.

Following the children’s interest in maps and treasure hunting, I have woven in a bit of a pirate theme.

On Monday we started pirate self-portraits, printed the letter x, and started our work in the garden! This is an enthusiastic group of gardeners, and we are all excited to be out there as much as possible. We planted peas and lettuce.

Tuesday, we used our imaginations in journals, and had another session of our Oral Language groups. The class went to the library and then we made signs for our garden bed in the outdoor classroom.

On Wednesday we practiced the +1 -1 concept in math and played a pirate game in the gym. Jesse and Sylvan were very brave and presented their warm/cool paintings at our Whole School Meeting. It feels so good to be slowly returning to our school community culture of inclusion and group gatherings. Later the kids went to look at the book fair items and then we went out to the forest. We also finished our pirate self-portraits. They are fabulous!

Thursday was a FULL day! We wrote about what we wished to see at the farm, went to the book fair and then had pizza for lunch! Later we welcomed Laura Kiel in to help us with a clay project. We added our signs to the garden and burned off some steam in the forest.

Friday was a school day and our trip to Ruckle Farm! Thank you again to Vaughn’s family for allowing this to happen. The kids learned more about how a farm operates, got to see goats, lambs and cows and so much more! We walked down to Grandma’s beach for lunch and then over to Ruckle Park campground for scavenger hunts of the forest and beach environments. It was so fun teaming up with Ms. K’s class and Mr. Macqueen’s group. The kids all enjoyed being a big ‘family’.

Next week will be a busy last week before the break! Please return all library books. I will be sending home spare clothes/inside shoes to be replenished and checked for size.

Newsletter #21

 March 3rd Edition of

The Kindergarten Class News

Hello Everyone, we have a couple busy weeks ahead! Please be sure to check the planner bag for notices and to read the dates below.

This week on Monday we continued working on our printing (z) and tried to use proper pencil grip (this can be hard!). In art, we talked about warm colours, painted and went to Music class.

Tuesday, we played “Treasure Island” in the gym. We wrapped up our measurement unit with a fun body measurement activity. We continued working on syllables in our Oral Language groups. Ask your child to clap out their name for you. Later we went on a nature scavenger hunt.

On Wednesday the class did a fun treasure chest activity and went to another Whole School Meeting. Mr. Lightfoot’s class taught everyone the Chicken Dance! Later the class went out for nature studies and then we practiced reading 3 letter words. There was a surprise fire “drill” and we were all a little soggy after waiting in the rain for the fire marshal to come turn off the alarm. Luckily it was the end of the day and we already had our jackets on!

Thursday was a half-day to accommodate the parent-teaching meetings. We worked on our vowel sounds and had free choice in the gym. I had to provide a lot of extra snack to kids. For the future, we always have 2 eating times before noon.

Next week will be a busy 5-day week. Please return the pizza order form and field trip slip if you haven't already done so.

We will be having a Pizza Day on Thursday, March 10. Please send in order forms by Monday.

We will be going on a fun field trip to Ruckle Farm! We are all very excited to learn more about the farm and see the animals. Thanks to Vaughn’s family for being so accommodating. Permission slips went home today (Thursday).
