 September 28th Edition of

The K/1 Class News

Hello Everyone!

It was another busy week! Here are some highlights.

On Monday we practiced our letter sounds in “The Alphabet Rap”. We also learned a new game in the gym and worked more on playing safely. The kids continue to work on printing, this week it was the letter i. We were the first class to visit the new library and look forward to checking books out soon!

Tuesday, we learned a new math game and went to the Whole School Meeting. We also had Music class and went to the forest.

Wednesday the class had their individual photos taken. We played in the gym and during our outside time, we went to the forest and went on a nature scavenger hunt. The kids learned about selecting “Just Right” books and we started our Home Reading program. I hope you enjoy reading with your child. Please return the reading books each day and help them fill out the reading log. Once the log is full, they choose a little prize.

Thursday was Orange Shirt Day! It was amazing to see almost everyone in the school wearing something orange in support of all children and this important message! We participated in a school wide “read-in” with an Indigenous theme where the kids signed up to hear books in multiage groups. We also had music class and harvested more veggies from the garden in preparation for our garden harvest feast next week!

We have really enjoyed the All About Me presentations! If you missed your day, please send it in whenever it is ready. Regular Show and Tell will start next week and we will be focusing on bringing items that begin with the letter of the week (Next week is the letter A). Here is your child’s day for the year:

Mondays (or Friday if Monday is a holiday): Abby, Aurora, Ava, Avery and Celeste

Tuesdays: Fiera, Gemma, Journey, Jordan and Jupiter

Wednesdays: Logan, Nayaan, Nina and Ollie

Thursdays: Sanghé, Siena, Westley, Wren and Yuawi

Please send one item each week on this day. If it is NOT your S&T day, please leave all toys at home. Thank you for your help with this.

The K/1 Class News

Hello Everyone!

The children continue to do an excellent job with school routines and expectations. Everyone is getting used to the morning sign in routines and they are learning to listen well and share with their friends.

I am still looking for a parent who is willing to be our class rep. Please let me know if you can take on this role.

On Monday the class started working on letter printing practice. We will work through all the lowercase letters first and follow the order suggested by Printing Like a Pro. As the children begin to learn to write, I encourage proper pencil grip as it makes writing and drawing so much easier. Here is a video that shows the proper pencil grip so you can reinforce it at home: https://youtu.be/Eq6ggYR-aeY

On Monday we also played a letter game, learned about the new library, and went on a colour hunt in the forest!

Tuesday, we started learning more about patterns. The kids practiced making patterns in class and in the forest. We also went to our second Whole School Meeting.  This will happen every week, where we sit with all the other students in the gym.  We sing O Canada then Happy Birthday to anyone who had a birthday during the past week.  Sometimes a class presents something they have been working on and other announcements are made. Later the class went to Music and then out to the forest.

On Wednesday we played more with patterns and later drew/wrote in our journals. We also combined math, writing and art and made fun pictures inspired by the book, “Ten Apples Up on Top” by Dr. Seuss.

Thursday was “free choice” in the gym, and we had a lot of fun! We also practices searching for the letters in our names (K) and writing simple sentences (1’s). Later the children painted and saw their names magically appear on the page! It was another Music Day and then we got to help harvest food from the garden to be used in our Garden Harvest Lunch coming up in October.

We are enjoying the All About Me projects. Thanks for all your hard work! Please send in your poster when it is ready for the class to enjoy. If you missed your date, please send in the photo board whenever it is ready.

Wednesday, October 2nd is Orange Shirt Day. This is a day students and staff are encouraged to wear orange in spirit of reconciliation and hope because every child matters. Here is a link to give you more information. https://www.ictinc.ca/blog/what-is-orange-shirt-day
