Newsletter #35

May 31st Edition of
The K/1 Class News

Hi everyone, here is our last newsletter of the month.

Monday Ms. Klare was away. The class worked on printing the letter ‘Vv’, went to the library (all books due back next week) and searched for shapes in nature.

On Tuesday we had our class and whole school photos taken. The kids were all great about the interruption to our regular schedule. Later we had Charlotte, from the Salt Spring Island Conservancy, come to do a pre-trip activity. The kids are all excited about our trip to Duck Creek next week. If you haven’t already sent back the permission slip, it must be in by Monday.

Wednesday we were visited by some of the students from Pender Island School, who put on a fantastic play about caring for our environment. They reminded us about how important it is to Reduce what we consume, Reuse what we can, Recycle our waste, Rethink our needs and Refuse to take excess (bags, trays etc.). The kids all loved the show and hopefully absorbed some of this valuable information. Later we studied the life cycle of the butterfly and then went outside.

On Thursday the kids wrote about what they want to be when they grow up and enjoyed a magic show! The Magician was very good and the kids all had a good laugh. In the afternoon they had centres time, cleaned up the class and played in the forest. We are trying to send extra clothes and belongings home now as the end of the year is near.

**Reminder** We will be going on a field trip to Duck Creek on June 6th. The trip is organized by the Salt Spring Conservancy and is always a great day of learning and adventure. Also, please be sure to have your child arrive at school on time on this day, as we will be getting organized to leave right away.

Newsletter #34

May 25th Edition of
The K/1 Class News

Hi everyone, we had a fun week!

Monday was a holiday, no school.

On Tuesday everyone was thrilled to arrive to see our new baby caterpillars! We will be raising them in the class and watching as they metamorphosis into Painted Lady butterflies. Later we wrote about the caterpillars in our journals and played musical hoops in gym. Later we worked on reading and spent time outside.

Wednesday was fun day! In the morning we played a “doubles” math game, practiced using the jump ropes and enjoyed a readers theatre presentation of “Good Night Moon” performed by the grade 1’s in our class. We then learned a bit more about butterflies and painted butterfly art. In the afternoon the kids in grades K-3 enjoyed fun day! They rotated through different stations like water relays, potato sack racing and so on. Everyone had a blast.

On Thursday the kids used their knowledge of letter sounds to figure out mystery words! It was a fun activity. After Whole School Meeting, Music and centres the kids had their last Nature Art class with Lisa. This time we worked on drawing shadows. Our time in the forest was magical. The wild roses are in full bloom, filling the air with their sweet aroma. Pink petals decorated the forest floor and the kids enjoyed gathering and tasting the sweet gifts from nature.

Friday was a school day and also Jump Rope for Heart. Thanks to all of you who sent in donations for this good cause. The kids had another fun afternoon participating in this event. The class also worked on printing practice, went to the library and played in centres.

We will be going on a field trip to Duck Creek on June 6th. Permission slips were sent home today (Friday). The trip is organized by the Salt Spring Conservancy and is always a great day of learning and adventure. Please fill out both forms and return them next week. Also, please be sure to have your child arrive at school on time on this day, as we will be getting organized to leave right away.

Newsletter #33

May 17th Edition of
The K/1 Class News

Hi everyone, here we are halfway through May already! This time of year is often hard on the children. It stays light later so many kids may have a harder time getting to sleep early enough. This does have an impact on their energy levels and behaviours at school. We encourage starting the bedtime routine early enough to allow a good sleep on school nights. Blackout blinds (or a dark sheet over the window) can do wonders!

On Monday we worked outside on soccer skills, started a game called, “Who am I?” where the kids can only ask “yes or no” questions for clues. We went to the library and then finished off the “Who am I” game, complete with animals face paint! We also worked on printing and played in the forest. Monday we celebrated Franky’s birthday!

Tuesday baby Max came to visit, we did a writing activity based on our Spirit Animals and had our last Oral Language Groups of the year.

On Wednesday we looked at all of the ways to make the number 10, enjoyed a Story Walk outside and made totem poles stories. Later we talked about some more uses of the cedar tree and started a weaving type craft outside. The choir performed for the Volunteer Appreciation Tea, and everyone was impressed with their lovely song. Tuesday was Sylvio’s birthday!

Thursday the kids loved free choice in gym, played sight word Bingo and went to Whole School Meeting. Thanks to those who sent change in for our community fundraiser. The kids went to Music class and later we took part in nature art with Lisa. Thursday was Jan and Jasmijn’s last day with us this year. We will all miss them!

May 10th Edition of
The K/1 Class News

Hello again, here are some highlights of our week.

On Monday Ms. Klare was away. The class worked on printing practice, an art project and went to the library. There are only a couple of weeks left of book sign-outs. The library will close to run inventory in June and all books will need to be returned.

Tuesday we worked on soccer skills in the gym, wrote in our journals and talked about what makes us special in Roots of Empathy. As always, the kids loved playing in centres time and in the forest.

On Wednesday we had a demonstration from Search and Rescue about how to be safe in the forest or if you get lost. The kids enjoyed the presentation and were happy to take home the safety packages. Everyone was very excited to share and write about their tiny treasures brought from home. The idea was to have an item that will inspire a special memory. The kids all worked hard on their writing.

Thursday we worked on poetry writing, went to music class and enjoyed working on our nature art with Lisa. The kids brought home gifts they made for Mother's Day. We hope you enjoy them.

May 3rdEdition of
The K/1 Class News

Hello all,
This week seemed to fly by! It’s a busy time now and many things are being fit in to our usual days.

OnMondaywe practiced printing and had library as usual. We also made mixed beasts in art (up on the wall). Then we painted with dandelion flowers outside and played circle games after forest time. Jasmjin and Jan are back and everyone is very happy about their return. Welcome back!

Tuesdaywas the Spring Showcase! Everyone enjoyed watching their peers up on stage and admiring the displays of crafts, cakes and more. It was a great event. We also had our Root of Empathy class and Oral Language groups and enjoyed PE outside.

On Wednesday we worked on doubles in math and played number Bingo. Later we found special spots in the forest to place our birds nests and we heard a story about birds.

Thursday we had our Whole School Meeting, Music and Nature art. We also talked about how special items, or smells, can trigger memories. We talked about how special memories make us feel and how we can write/draw about these experiences. Next Wednesday the children are invited to bring in a item from home that brings back a special memory for them. We will use this for a writing project.

A note was sent home in the planner about this already (thanks to those who have sent the jars in) but here it is again if you missed it:

Dear Parents,
Please send a small bottle or jar with lid to school with your child. Old tincture bottles are good. Make sure lid can seal! We need them for our Mother's Day project. Thank you, Ms. Klare
