February 22nd Edition of
The K/1 Class News

Hi Everyone!
Here are some highlights from our week:

On Monday the class worked hard on their printing. They also had fun making mandalas with their big buddies. We took the activity outside later and made natural mandalas. The kids enjoyed learning about growing patterns.

Tuesday the class started learning about compound words in our Oral Language Groups. We also started a kindness challenge! Our goal is to record 100 acts of kindness on our class kindness tree. Later, we made shapes out of natural objects outside.

On Wednesday Mrs. Van Riel was away at a Union meeting. The class learned more about shapes, played some new games in gym and worked on building sentences. Later the kids made the letters of the alphabet in nature. The start of snow was exciting!

Thursday was a beautiful snowy day. The class worked on their reading, had free choice in gym and David and Ava read the sentences they created to the school at Whole School Meeting. Well done you two! Later the class went to Music and made little books about the four seasons.

March 8th will be an early dismissal day for the Student Led Conferences. This is a mandatory activity as it is considered your child’s report card. If you cannot make it on the 8th we will reschedule. Buses will run as usual and will leave the school at 11:30am. Please sign up for a meeting slot on the Google doc shared with you. If you have trouble using the Google doc, you can request a time and we can fill it in for you. Remember to arrive 15-20 minutes before your meeting time to go through the learning stations with your child.

Registration for the 2018-2019 school year is now open! If you know of anyone with a child turning five this year, please advise them to see Tania in the office to register for Kindergarten.

Important dates to remember:
February 28 Pink Shirt Day
March 8 Early dismissal for Student Led Conferences
March 16 First day of Spring Break
April 3 School back in session

Hello Everyone!
Here are some highlights from our week:

Monday there was no school due to the Family Day holiday. We hoe you enjoyed the long weekend.

On Tuesday the class was excited to have baby Max visit again during Roots of Empathy. We worked in our journals and also studied earthworms outside. The class worked on breaking up sentences into words and then recreating meaningful sentences during our Oral Language Groups.

Wednesday was Valentines Day! The kids had a fun day. Thanks to the parents who sent in snacks to share, it always makes these days more special. We had Jodi from UVIC visiting and she enjoyed her time. The class went on a number hunt during math and we learned about the First Nations legend of why Mt. Maxwell is bent over while we were visiting the bog.

Thursday Mrs. Van Riel was home sick so Mr. B. covered the class. The kids had free choice in gym, went to Whole School Meeting and Music. Later they learned about shapes in nature.

Friday was a school day and was also Ms. Klare’s first day back in our class. The kids practiced their printing, enjoyed centres time and created natural mandalas outside. Welcome back Ms. Klare.

Next Thursday we plan on taking a walking field trip down to Pebble Beach. We will leave the school at 1pm and be back in time for busses and pick up at the end of the day. If anyone would like to join us on our adventure please let us know. We always appreciate an extra adult or two when walking on the road; however we will be taking the back way so traffic will be light.

Important dates to remember:

February 8th Edition of
The K/1 Class News

Greetings Everyone!
Although we are technically still in winter, it is hard not to feel that spring is around the corner. Buds are starting to open and flowers are shooting up all over the place!

On Monday we started learning about the “Uu” team of letters (U, V, X, Y and Z). It was surprising to learn how difficult the children found it to remember these letters when starting at this unusual spot. You could try making a game of it at home, or in the car, by giving them a random letter to start reciting the alphabet from and see how they do. We also worked on a spring art project and had free choice in the gym.

Tuesday was the first day the Math Playground was set up in the gym. The kids had fun exploring some of the different math games. Later we worked in our journals (they are really getting good at this) and learned about how a group of words make up a sentence in our Oral Language Groups.

On Wednesday we continued with the Math Playground, worked on ‘making ten’ and practiced our reading. Later we worked on the school mural. This project is really starting to come to life and the kids are taking pride in their work.

Thursday we had our last day with the Math Playground, we made Valentines Day cards, went to the Whole School Meeting and Music class. Later we practiced our reading and enjoyed the sunny day outside.

Next Wednesday is Valentines Day. If your child chooses to bring cards or anything to school, we ask that they bring one for everyone. We have made little bags to collect the cards in. A class list was sent out last week but if you need the names again please let us know. We will be having a shared snack on Valentines Day. If you would like to send something to share, the kids would be sure to enjoy it.

Important dates to remember:
February 12 Family Day (no school)
February 14 Valentines Day/class party
February 16 School in session (Ms. Klare’s first day teaching in our class)
February 28 Pink Shirt Day

Warmly,
Ara and Kaz

February 1st Edition of
The K/1 Class News

Happy February Everyone!
It was an eventful week.

On Monday we worked on our printing, made some rain inspired artwork and welcomed Eli back from his trip to India! It’s so nice having you back Eli.

Tuesday Mrs. Freeman taught the class while Mrs. Van Riel and Kaz were at an Early Literacy In-Service. The class wrote in their journals, welcomed baby Max back during Roots of Empathy and created more beautiful art.

On Wednesday we played math games, had an extra Roots of Empathy class and practiced alphabet knowledge during our outside time.

Thursday we learned about the “am” word family, Franky, Ava and Eli presented at Whole School Meeting and the kids went to Music. Later we worked on the school mural. On Thursday we also welcomed two new students, Jasmijn and Jan, into our class. We are all excited to have them here and look forward to getting to know them better.

As many of you have probably heard by now, Ms. Mullen will be away for three months starting February 14th recovering from a wrist surgery. Kaz will be acting as principal during Marie’s absence. We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Klare back as the successful candidate to teach our class on Mondays, while Kaz is covering for Marie. It should be a very easy transition for the kids as they all know and love Ms. Klare.

Thanks to everyone for getting on board with the home reading program. The kids are always happy to pick a new book to take home each day. Remember that the reading time at home should be an enjoyable experience and a good excuse to snuggle up for a few minutes and read together. Don’t worry if you miss a night, it should be stress free.

A reminder that Family Math Night is coming up on Thursday, February 8th. Families are welcome to come to the gym and explore math games and puzzles in the Math Playground. We will have a short information session for parents to learn about how math instruction has changed and how parents can support their children in math learning at home. The Math Playground will be open in the gym from 6-7:30 pm and we will have the parent info session around 7 pm. We hope that many of you join us for this event.

Important dates to remember:
February 8 Family Math Night
February 12 Family Day (no school)
February 14 Valentines Day/class party
February 16 School in session
February 28 Pink Shirt Day
